This month we’re excited to feature Kirstin Broome! Although Kirstin has been in Rolando for a relatively short time, she has gotten her hands dirty with varying volunteer opportunities here in our neighborhood, including key leadership positions. She started with Catwalk and Clay Park Clean-ups with the CIT (Community Improvement Team) right when she arrived in 2013, started volunteering for the Rolando Street Fair (RSF) in 2014, and has been our Sponsorship Chair (in which she leads finding sponsors to support and grow our fair) since 2016. Further, Kirstin was acting Interim Board Secretary for the Rolando Community Council for the 2017-18 year and worked on the Tree Canopy Preservation Committee! She is such a huge asset to our community and we are so thankful for her continued community activism! If you see her hiking around the neighborhood or out on the trail, please give her a big high five for all of her help! Here’s our Q&A with Kirstin:
Chris and I moved to Rolando in July 2013.
2. What’s your favorite thing about Rolando?
I love the great neighbors and engaged community. We’ve made so many wonderful friends in Rolando. I adore the iconic look of Rolando with its tree-lined boulevard and unique houses. There are so many fantastic restaurants and amenities in walking distance, and it is close to downtown, the beach, and the mountains. It is such a unique San Diego neighborhood, with a small town feel but all of the benefits of being part of a large urban city.
3. What’s one thing you’d like your neighbors to know about you? I love to hike and will be trying to do it a lot more this year. So any recommendations about local hiking trails are always welcome. My most recent hike was the Walker Canyon loop trail to see this year’s amazing Poppy bloom.
4. What’s your favorite RCC event? Definitely the annual Rolando Street Fair.
5. What does RCC membership mean to you? I think that being a member of the RCC is an important part of engaging with our neighborhood. It is a great resource for community information and to help facilitate positive change in Rolando. I’d strongly encourage everyone to attend the monthly meetings, become a member, and consider volunteering for some of the fun events and community improvement projects throughout the year.
