Oddities a New Exhibit at the Birch Aquarium

By Courtney Daly-Pavone

Imagine having the ability to zap prey, have supervision, or make yourself invisible. If that sounds like science fiction, think again.

Some of the sea creatures living in our oceans have the superpowers of comic book heroes. Oddities a new exhibit at the Birch Aquarium looks at the amazing abilities of some marine animals to adapt to harsh environments and survive. The Oddities exhibit is not only a learning experience for museum visitors of all ages, but it’s a fun approach to scientific research! Oddities has a comic book design layout that takes a look at some astounding facts about marine life in an interactive whimsical way. Kids will love that it’s a tangible exhibit, complete with costumes, and plenty of panels to open and guess what’s behind the door.
“We’re excited to showcase some of the wonderful specimens from the Collections and to tell their stories in this playful, engaging way. By coming face-to-face with unusual specimens, visitors will get to see how our Collections empower real discoveries in science and education every day,” said Charlotte Seid, manager of Scripps’ Benthic Invertebrate Collection.
Oddities was created in partnership with the team from the Scripps Oceanographic Collections, where millions of specimens allow scientists to understand some of the amazing adaptations marine creatures have developed to survive. This interactive exhibit includes examples of some of the most unique creatures from all depths and highlights how they have inspired everything from cinema and pop culture to medicine and engineering. You’ll learn what it takes to collect scientific samples and have the opportunity to test out some of these unique adaptations.
