Karlene Chavis – Chief Meteorologist CBS 8
CBS 8’s Karlene Chavis is GOING PINK! That’s right, Karlene has accepted the challenge to be a Susan G. Komen Big Wig.
All March, along with other passionate local leaders and community members, Karlene will be sporting her pink locks to help raise awareness and move the fight against breast cancer forward.
1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide.
The money raised from Karlene’s Big Wig campaign will fund research to discover more effective treatments, policy efforts to make access to care easier for all, and access to breast cancer services, emotional support, financial assistance, and more.

I’m the Chief Meteorologist for CBS 8 in San Diego. I have worked as a Broadcast Meteorologist for over 13 years. Prior to working in San Diego, I worked in Miami, Florida, and Palm Springs, California. I’m often asked what I love most about what I do. I love the potential to make a difference in someone’s life. Whether it is making someone laugh, helping you navigate your day or week through my forecasting, shedding light on an environmental issue you weren’t aware of, or showing younger generations, especially minorities, and girls, that this is an attenable career for you, are all examples of why I love my job.
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Be kind to yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s how you recover and learn that helps you grow as a person.
COMMUNITY
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
I love Cardellino, Buona Forchetta, Tahini, Authentic Middle Eastern Street Food, and Surf and Soul Spot.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I have lived and worked in San Diego County for five years and counting.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I love the vastness and various scenery of San Diego County. I love being outdoors! It is very rare that I am home on the weekend. I love that I can drive out to the mountains in the morning/afternoon for a hike and be sipping a glass of wine at the coast watching the sunset a few hours later.
