San Diego Local Community News

In a joyous celebration marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, alongside City staff and community members, officially reopened the Tecolote Shores South playground, comfort station, and parking lot in Mission Bay today. The significant enhancements to the park have transformed it into one of the most accessible playgrounds in the entire city.

The centerpiece of the playground is a raised, planted play island, ingeniously designed to create a series of play coves. What sets this playground apart is its commitment to inclusivity; accessible pathways allow children of all abilities to reach the play island, ensuring that even the tallest points of the structure are reachable for everyone. Among the accessibility upgrades are a merry-go-round, rockers, swings, a zipline, and an ADA-compliant pathway with state-of-the-art security lighting, seamlessly connecting Tecolote Shores North and Tecolote Shores South.

The $5.74 million project, a testament to the City’s dedication to community well-being, includes not only the playground improvements but also a prefabricated comfort station, parking lot enhancements, upgraded lighting, drinking fountains, shade structures, landscaping, and irrigation.

Councilmember Jennifer Campbell expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “Today marks a significant milestone in our commitment to creating spaces that are welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. The Tecolote Shores South playground is now a shining example of inclusivity, offering children of all abilities the opportunity to play, explore, and create cherished memories together.”

This achievement represents the completion of Phase 2 of the Tecolote Park Improvements project. The first phase, completed in November 2022, focused on upgrading Tecolote Shores North.

The grand reopening ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 9:30 a.m., took place at Tecolote Shores South, located at 1740 E. Mission Bay Dr., San Diego, CA 92109. The event was a visually stunning ribbon-cutting ceremony and offers the opportunity for interviews with Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, District 2, Rania Amen, Director of the Engineering and Capital Projects Department, and Andy Field, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department.

The Tecolote Shores South Playground stands as a testament to San Diego’s commitment to fostering accessible and inclusive spaces for its residents, ensuring that every child can experience the joy of play without limitations.
